Airport emergency exercise

WPCS Dundee chaplain Rev Allan Webster (pictured) put his WPCS Practical Disaster Response training to good use on his home patch recently.

As chaplain to Dundee Airport he was involved in a multi-agency emergency training exercise in the city which involved around 150 participants – some of whom found themselves in the River Tay at one point!

In addition to the aiport’s own firefighters and staff, representatives of the Police, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Ambulance, Coastguard and RNLI emergency services took part in the routine practice, designed to test the airport’s resilience in the event of a full-scale emergency.

Airport Manager Derrick Lang said the exercise went very well: “There were a few learning points but those always come out in such exercises – that’s why we do them. All the equipment was evaluated and worked well. As part of our emergency orders, we include a call out for local church members and in the past it took quite a lot of time for us to contact all the different churches. Allan can facilitate that for us which makes things much easier. As our chaplain, what he does here at the airport is all quite relevant and pertinent. The main thing for us is that he is here on a regular basis, so everyone knows him.”

It is a requirement of the Civil Aviation Authority for airports like Dundee to test their emergency procedures in partnership with external emergency service providers.
