While Chaplains will usually seek to calm and resolve disputes in the work place before they become a problem, occasionally disputes will escalate to a point where mediation is required.

Many organisations have arrangements in place to use independent mediation services. However, where invited to do so Work Place Chaplains can also act as mediators. This can be an attractive option for all parties involved in a dispute saving on lost working time as well as months of frustrating and generally bad working relationships.

The chaplain should know the organisation and individuals concerned to a far greater extent than an outside agency could and can be very flexible –meetings can take place at any time and are not limited to ordinary working days or hours.

The whole process of conflict resolution is one which is at the very heart of good chaplaincy, which aims to promote harmony, respect and wellbeing in all areas of the work place.
